She was the embodiment of abundance—both earthly and spiritual. And 13, the number of lunar cycles in a year, was her sacred number. Women have 13 menstrual cycles annually, and ancient priestesses often gathered in circles of 13 to perform rituals of healing, harvest, and prosperity. The number was celebrated as a symbol of life, fertility and cyclical power. Many ancient calendars, including the Hebrew, Babylonian and Mayan, were based on 13-month lunar years.

So how did something once so sacred become so feared?

From Sacred to Scapegoated: The Demotion of 13

To understand why the number 13 and Friday became targets of superstition, we must understand how power was consolidated.

As patriarchal structures and monotheistic religions began to spread across medieval Europe and beyond, anything associated with the feminine, the cyclical, or the magical was systematically demonised. Female deities were recast as witches or demons. Ancient rituals became heresies. Knowledge that empowered people to be in tune with the Earth was now condemned as pagan.

As patriarchal, monotheistic religions rose to dominance, particularly Christianity and Islam, there was a systematic effort to suppress matriarchal traditions and feminine spiritual practices.

So it was vilified.

As a Business Numerologist, bearing a variation of the goddess’s name, ‘Frea’ I was somewhat unnerved when recently visiting the 1000 year old All Saints Church in Helmsley, Yorkshire, UK. One of the walls of the church is dedicated to Aeilred, the Abbott, in 1147AD, of the Medieval Rievaulx Abbey. There he is depicted slaying a dragon carrying Freya, the Norse Goddess. What the Frigg?! Maybe I can take comfort with the vantage of the 21st century, because now the monastery lies in ruins and my namesake, appears to one of the most popular names for baby girls.

But…. in order to fully reclaim power, we must lean into the shadows of a fear that still prevails.

With the rise of Christianity, fear was planted where there was once reverence. Disconnection was encouraged where there was once harmony. The collective power of women, communities, and the land was fractured—replaced by hierarchical systems that privileged the few over the many.

Consider this pivotal historical moment: The Council of Nicaea in 325 AD. Convened by Roman Emperor Constantine, the council formalised Christian doctrine and suppressed divergent spiritual beliefs.

Traditions like goddess worship and women in spiritual leadership were outlawed or rebranded as heretical. Christianity was enforced. The monopoly, (Mono, a prefix which means ‘one, only, single’) as spearheaded by an Emperor ruling an Empire stretching from York, a few miles from that church in Helmsley, UK to Constantinople, now Istanbul, Turkey.

And so Friday the 13th went from being a powerful portal of transformation to a feared date of misfortune.

But symbols can be reclaimed—and so can our stories.

On the back of the US dollar bill, a closer look reveals a deliberate numerological design. The Founding Fathers, despite establishing a patriarchal government, were well aware of the symbolic feminine potency of 13:

• 13 arrows in the eagle’s talon.

• 13 olive leaves and 13 olives in the other.

And like a bull, gently meandering through a field, …if there are too many red flags, too many abuses of the system, she’ll tear you down and expose all in a bear market.
